Top-seeded Americans Bob and Mike Bryan captured their third title of the season, defeating second seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic 3-6, 6-4 10-8 in the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Sunday in Rome.
The Bryan twins converted two of seven break points and won three points more than their opponents in recovering from a set down to win in 1hour, 14 minutes.
It is the first title at the Foro Italico for the Bryan twins. Twice before they have finished as runners-up in Rome, falling to Michael Llodra-Fabrice Santoro in 2005 and to Fabrice Santoro-Nenad Zimonjic last year.
"Feels great to win Rome, especially after being in the finals three times," said Mike Bryan. "I think it's maybe our tenth time here, so it's finally nice to knock that one down, especially against a good team: Nesty and Zimo. I mean, it came down to the wire today."
The Bryan twins have now amassed 47 ATP doubles titles, including 12 ATP Masters Series titles. The 30-year-olds won their first title of the season, and their 11th AMS title, at the Sony Ericsson Open in April (d. Knowles/Bhupathi), before capturing their second title last week on clay in Barcelona (d. Fyrstenberg/Matkowski).
On having now won eight of the nine Masters Series events, Bob Bryan said: "It's very tough, each one of these Masters Series is very different and different conditions, different food, different balls, different courts. You know, to finish our career having all of them would be something special."
The American duo have also finished as runners-up in Sydney, Delray Beach, San Jose, and Las Vegas. They now improve to 32-8 for the season. In the second round on Thursday, Mike Bryan recorded a career milestone as he won his 500th doubles match.
